MotionChart is developing\u00a0a web-based platform\u00a0which enables to trackpatient`s health and\u00a0training parameters and\u00a0offer efficient remote\u00a0counselling. The system\u00a0is directed at therapists\u00a0and patients undergoing\u00a0cardiac rehabilitation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur enterprise improves rehabilitation\u00a0services. Currently, we are developing\u00a0a decision support system that aims\u00a0to support patients and physicians in\u00a0condition management \u2013 we are moving\u00a0towards remote monitoring and remotely\u00a0supervised training,\u201d explains Tarvo Tamm,
\nthe managing director of MotionChart.<\/p>\n

The platform serves as both, a web-based training diary and counselling\u00a0environment. \u201cThe patient, using our\u00a0training monitoring service, records his\u00a0training sessions to our system and the\u00a0physician as well as the patient can both\u00a0add notes, comments and instructions.\u201d
\nThe patient, for example, should make\u00a0comments about his condition after the\u00a0workout. MotionChart is focused on cardiac\u00a0patients since they need to follow supervised exercise program for restoring normal heart functions.<\/p>\n

Remote monitoring of patients<\/h3>\n

It is has been clinically proven that active participation in the rehabilitation program influences positively the average life\u00a0expectancy of the cardiac patient. \u201cThe\u00a0restoration of functional capabilities, while\u00a0strengthening the heart at the same time,\u00a0is the key to restoring the patient`s former\u00a0quality of life,\u201d says Tamm.\u00a0MotionChart has detected several\u00a0problems at both ends of the healthcare\u00a0system. \u201cWe do not have a complete\u00a0overview of all the phases of rehabilitation process, there is no communication\u00a0between different parties. The essence of\u00a0our idea is to create a safe rehabilitation
\nenvironment and to develop solutions\u00a0that could actually benefit to the patient,\u201d\u00a0explains Tamm.\u00a0Currently, cardiac patients must go\u00a0to the hospital, as they require supervised excercising. \u201cIf we manage to integrate the monitoring device to our system,\u00a0the patient is free to exercise at home
\nor at the gym,\u201d Tamm notes. By reducing\u00a0patient health costs and administrative\u00a0costs of the general healthcare system,\u00a0the solution can be benefitial for both\u00a0parties. At the moment, physicians do not have an overview of what the patient is doing\u00a0beyond hospital walls. \u201cThe patient may\u00a0go to rehabilitation sessions, but this is\u00a0not enough. The person suffering a heart\u00a0disease must be active and not spend his\u00a0days in front of the television, for example.\u00a0Inactive lifestyle increases the risk for a\u00a0second infarction and the patient never\u00a0restores his quality of life.<\/p>\n

Automatic collection of health data<\/h3>\n

According to Tamm, it is vital for cardiac\u00a0patients to monitor their heart rate during\u00a0training sessions. That is why the system\u00a0of MotionChart is established on a pulse\u00a0watch. It must be noted that patient`s training zones differ noticeably of those of\u00a0a healthy person. \u201cWe cannot determine
\ntraining zones on the guidelines meant for\u00a0healthy people. The training zones will be\u00a0set for each patient personally, based on a\u00a0simple health test\u201d.
\nTamm acclaimed that several health\u00a0and fitness apps work on the same
\nprinciples as MotionChart but they are\u00a0not targeted to rehabilitation patients. Heartrate-based training\u00a0data is only one information piece among\u00a0several others. In addition, it is possible to\u00a0upload information on\u00a0patient`s blood pressure level or other\u00a0health parameters to\u00a0our system. The system enables to monitor patient`s level of activity as well as his\u00a0sleep quality.\u00a0\u201cWe must ensure that the devices are\u00a0stable and compatible with our system.<\/p>\n

That is the reason there is a limited number of devices connected at the moment,\u00a0though we expect to increase the number\u00a0in the near future. We intend to offer the\u00a0solution on a monthly fee and, if necessary, the required devices will be included\u00a0in the package,\u201d explains Tamm.<\/p>\n

Sights set on Europe<\/h3>\n

Some MotionChart team members participated on the contest called \u201cAjujaht\u201d \u2013 the\u00a0Estonian biggest business idea contest.\u00a0The initial project was to monitor the\u00a0elderly by using a special device that can\u00a0be worn around their wrists, if something\u00a0happens, an immediate message will be
\nsent to the family. After Tarvo Tamm had\u00a0joined the team, the focus of the project\u00a0changed: \u201cWe did some research in different fields of medicine and that lead us to\u00a0the rehabilitation of cardiac patients\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the very beginning, we considered several rehabilitation sectors, for\u00a0example, neurological rehabilitation,\u00a0but we indicated a number of problems\u00a0that require huge financial resources\u00a0and many years for development. Not\u00a0that cardiac rehabilitation would be the\u00a0easiest choice, but we\u00a0can gene ra te value\u00a0in a shorter period of\u00a0time,\u201d Tamm explains.<\/p>\n

MotionChart develops\u00a0the system in cooperation with physicians\u00a0and physiotherapists\u00a0whose specialty is cardiac rehabilitation. \u201cSpeaking of cardiac rehabilitation, we\u00a0have not yet discovered similar products in the US or Europe,\u00a0so the timing is right and the market is\u00a0still wide open,\u201d says Tamm.<\/p>\n

Tamm understands that it is a challenging business, but he believes that\u00a0if things are done right, it is definitely\u00a0possible to generate value for both the\u00a0patient and the physician. \u201cIt is a well-known fact that large amount of cardiac\u00a0patients do not participate in rehabilitation process. Thus, we should develop\u00a0innovative and cost-effective solutions to\u00a0change the statistics,\u201d explains Tamm.\u00a0MotionChart hopes that in the future
\nexports will constitute at least 95% of\u00a0their activities. Initially, the goal of the
\nenterprise is to expand to Europe.\u00a0Tamm recognizes that in this kind of
\nbusiness goals must be ambitious. \u201cWe\u00a0must strive to reach the point where in\u00a04-5 years time hundreds of thousands\u00a0of patients are being \u2018cared for\u2019 in our\u00a0environment.
