When Michael Opondo first founded <\/strong>Kontorva<\/strong><\/a> in Kenya, the goal was simple: connect companies with skilled software developers. But what began as a talent matchmaking service has evolved into a tech company that delivers full, product-ready software and data analytics solutions \u2013 and now operates in Tehnopol Science and Business Park.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe started by connecting companies with good developers,\u201d said Opondo. \u201cBut we soon realized that it wasn\u2019t enough to just link people \u2013 we needed to ensure that they could actually deliver real solutions. That\u2019s when Kontorva became more than a connector; we became a product delivery partner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From law to tech innovation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Opondo\u2019s background might surprise those who meet him in Estonia\u2019s startup ecosystem. Trained as a lawyer and later working in international development, his path into technology wasn\u2019t linear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorking in the NGO sector taught me about structure, compliance, and most importantly, impact,\u201d he explained. \u201cIf you can\u2019t measure your impact, you\u2019re not really achieving anything. That mindset carried over to how I now build tech solutions \u2013\u00a0 everything we do must have measurable impact and clear value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That sense of structure and accountability proved essential when building Kontorva\u2019s model: combining vetted developers from Africa with clients in Europe who expect precision, transparency, and results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building across continents<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kontorva\u2019s team of seven operates between Estonia and Kenya, supported by a pool of over 130 developers who can be brought into projects as needed. The company works with both Estonian and international clients \u2013 including businesses in Switzerland and Kenya \u2013 but Estonia has become its main base for growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Kenya, we were putting in 80% of the effort and seeing 20% of the results,\u201d said Opondo. \u201cHere, it\u2019s the opposite \u2013 we get 80% of the results from 20% of the effort. That\u2019s why we decided to make Kenya our delivery center and Estonia our main business hub.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operating remotely since the beginning, Kontorva has built a transparent and trust-based internal culture. Team members work Monday to Thursday, hold daily standups, and keep all documentation \u2013 including financials and project progress \u2013 openly accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone in the company knows what\u2019s happening across departments,\u201d said Opondo. \u201cIf someone new joins, they can immediately see the bigger picture. That openness builds trust and accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supported by Tehnopol\u2019s Startup Incubator<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kontorva joined the Tehnopol Startup Incubator<\/a> soon after Opondo relocated to Estonia. According to him, the experience accelerated their growth and brought clarity to their strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe mentorship was brutally honest \u2013 in a good way,\u201d he noted. \u201cWe had a lot of unnecessary clutter in our operations. The incubator helped us bring structure and precision to what we do. That made us move faster and deliver better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having now completed the program, Kontorva remains in touch with its mentor and continues to operate from the Tehnopol campus, surrounded by other innovative startups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New product launches and expansion plans<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Alongside client projects, Kontorva is developing its own in-house products. One of them \u2013 \u00c4rikaart<\/a>, or \u201cbusiness map\u201d in translation from Estonian \u2013 was recently launched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u00c4rikaart is our first internally built product,\u201d Opondo said. \u201cIt\u2019s currently in early access, and we\u2019re gathering feedback before the full release. Our goal is to continue developing products that can stand on their own while strengthening Kontorva\u2019s core business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u2019s long-term vision is ambitious: expand its footprint throughout the Baltics and Eastern Europe, while continuing to serve clients across East and Southern Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe see ourselves as a bridge between two continents,\u201d said Opondo. \u201cEstonia gave us a strong base in Europe, and Kenya remains a source of incredible talent. We want to keep connecting those worlds through technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
