Global migraine app developed by Estonians is soon available for specialists as a medical device

Estonian Connected Health Cluster’s member Migrevention is developing the first fully digital headache clinic that has 4000 users around the world. In May, Migrevention became a software based medical device manufacturer.

Migraine, a debilitating primary headache affects more than 1 billion people worldwide. At the moment only 1-4% get evidence based treatment in specialised headache clinics. The aim of the Estonian digital healthtech startup is to help people suffering from migraine and relieve the healthcare system burden by using innovative digital tools.

Since March last year, Migrevention has been validating their digital headache diary functionality. The product helps to improve the quality of life of people suffering from migraine and other primary headaches through better accessibility to evidence based treatment. With the help of a digital headache diary, the user can log migraine episodes, taken medications, possible triggers and other important factors. The data can be easily and safely shared with a headache specialist with whom a chat-based counselling service is also enabled.

In May 2022, Migrevention became a software based medical device manufacturer who is starting to provide solutions for health care providers in addition to the digital headache diary for patients that is already widely used. The company is ready to bring their first MDR class I software-based medical devices to market in the EU.

The CEO of Migrevention, Katrina Laks emphasised that fulfilling the regulatory requirements is an important step in the company roadmap: “We have known since the beginning, that our product is a medical device and must meet the respective European regulatory requirements. The whole team has made a huge effort to achieve this. Digital solutions for preventing, diagnosing, monitoring and treating various conditions and diseases are here to stay. In 2022, they should be with thorough clinical background and patient-centred product design, and available and usable for everyone. Our solution will simplify the work for headache specialists and make treatment available for at least 10x more people.”

Migrevention is an Estonian medical technology company created in 2020 by headache patients and specialists. Migrevention is also one of the founding members of DTx Estonia. The company’s fast growth has been supported by investors, Connected Health Cluster, Health Founders and Tartu Biotechnology Park.
