A pavement producing solar electricity was installed at Tehnopol

At the end of last year, a pavement producing solar electricity was installed near Tehnopol’s smart pedestrian crossing and Bikeep’s electric scooter car park. In addition to renewable energy production, the new pavement will make it safer for pedestrians to cross the road by using lights to signal whether the trail is safe to cross.

According to Tarmo Loog, the real estate development manager at Tehnopol, they’re planning to use the pavement in various ways. “In addition to making the crossing safer, we plan to use the new pavement at the Bikeep electric scooter rental point to charge vehicles with renewable energy,” said Loog.

The pavement developed at TalTech is currently being tested as a prototype. If the tests prove successful, it is hoped that it will be possible to install pavements in larger areas in the future. According to Loog, in such a case, Tehnopol may consider covering their entire promenade with a road surface that produces solar electricity.

According to Loog, Tehnopol is happy to offer the opportunity to test green technologies. “What is special about Tehnopol is the opportunity to test the possibility of different solutions working together – in this case, connecting the pavement to the Bercman smart pedestrian crossing and the Bikeep electric scooter charging station. This will enable testers to get a more complete solution for their prototype faster, ”added Loog.

The pavement was built within the project “Development and commissioning of pavements producing solar electricity” initiated by the Tallinn Environment and Public Utilities Board.
