A network that supports growth: Hepta Insights and Thorgate’s collaboration in Tehnopol’s ecosystem

At Tehnopol Science and Business Park, technology-driven companies operate in an environment designed to accelerate collaboration, experimentation, and growth. As the largest science and business park in the Baltics, Tehnopol brings together startups, scale-ups, research institutions, and technology partners, creating the conditions for companies to find the right expertise exactly when they need it.

One example of this ecosystem in action is the long-term collaboration between Hepta Insights, a deep-tech company developing AI-powered software for power grid inspection, and Thorgate, a software development partner that has supported Hepta at key stages of the product’s evolution.

Hepta Insights: Building an AI-driven product for power grid resilience

Hepta Insights develops software that helps power grid utilities assess the condition of their assets using drone-captured RGB and thermal images, videos, and LiDAR 3D point clouds. At the core of the product is Hepta’s own AI-based analysis, which enables automatic detection of anomalies such as overheated or damaged components across power grids that can span thousands of kilometers.

This automation is a critical part of Hepta’s value proposition, allowing utilities to analyze vast amounts of inspection data faster and more accurately than manual workflows ever could. Today, Hepta Insights is used by utilities around the world, from Latvia in Europe to Chile in South-America, helping make power grids more resilient and maintenance decisions more data-driven.

Early product foundations: Collaborating with Thorgate

In the early stages of the product’s development, before Hepta Insights became a commercial SaaS solution, Hepta worked together with Thorgate to build the very first internal version of the product. At that time, the software was primarily designed for Hepta’s own team and focused on essential functionality such as:

  • uploading large volumes of inspection images,
  • viewing and managing visual data,
  • manually tagging and annotating findings.

This first version laid the technical foundation on top of which Hepta later built its commercial product. Around 2021, Hepta’s in-house team expanded and began transforming the platform into a scalable product for external customers, adding advanced features such as automated defect detection for images and videos.

Scaling the product with external expertise when it matters

As Hepta’s product matured, customer needs evolved. One such requirement was the ability to visualize 3D point-cloud data in additional industry-standard formats. In particular, customers wanted to view Orbit Point Cloud (.opc) data using Bentley Systems’ iTwin platform directly within Hepta Insights.

This requirement came with a strict deadline, while Hepta’s in-house team was simultaneously working on other time-critical core features. Instead of slowing down product development, Hepta turned again to Thorgate for targeted support.

Thorgate provided a software engineer who worked closely with Hepta’s in-house developers to integrate Bentley’s iTwin point-cloud visualization into the existing Insights platform. The result was a seamless extension of the product that enabled users to visualize complex 3D point-cloud data without disrupting ongoing development or compromising delivery timelines.

A partnership model that preserves core IP

This collaboration highlights an important principle for Hepta: core product logic and AI capabilities remain firmly in-house, while external partners are engaged strategically to accelerate development when needed. Thorgate’s contribution focused on extending the existing product with clearly defined functionality, complementing, not replacing, Hepta’s internal expertise.

According to Hepta, working with Thorgate feels like working with an extension of the internal team: responsive, reliable, and aligned with product goals, especially when deadlines are tight.

The role of Tehnopol: Ecosystem as a competitive advantage

The collaboration between Hepta and Thorgate is also a reflection of Tehnopol’s role as an innovation connector. By bringing ambitious technology companies and experienced development partners into the same ecosystem, Tehnopol lowers the friction of collaboration and helps companies move faster without sacrificing quality or ownership of their core technology.

For companies based in Tehnopol, the campus offers more than physical space; it provides access to trusted partners, shared knowledge, and a network that supports sustainable growth.

Focused partnerships in a strong innovation ecosystem

The case of Hepta Insights and Thorgate demonstrates how technology companies can scale effectively by combining:

  • strong in-house product and AI expertise,
  • targeted use of external development partners,
  • a supportive innovation environment like Tehnopol.

By keeping core capabilities internal and bringing in partners like Thorgate for well-defined, high-impact extensions, Hepta has been able to grow its product without compromising its long-term vision, a model that many deep-tech companies can learn from.
